Topic:

Moon Survival: Designing AI-Assisted, Open-Ended Scenarios for Interdisciplinary STEM Education

Abstract:

This hands-on workshop immerses teachers in a cinematic, noir-inspired “survival on the Moon” scenario that blends storytelling, science, and AI-supported problem solving. Participants step into a learner’s role, confronting an unexpected lunar challenge that demands creative, evidence-based decision-making under constraints.

Using an open-ended game structure, teachers will:

  • Experience a student-centered inquiry where facts, principles, and trade-offs drive solutions.
  • Leverage AI as a thinking partner for ideation, modeling, and rapid feedback—while critically evaluating its limits.
  • Translate the experience into classroom-ready activities that cultivate resilience, collaboration, and scientific reasoning.

We will address common hurdles in facilitating open-ended STEM challenges—such as limited background knowledge, uncertainty about “correct” answers, and anticipating student perspectives. By the end, participants will leave with a ready-to-use scenario template, strategies for scaffolding ambiguity productively, and techniques for assessing process as well as product.

This workshop is ideal for teacher professional development leaders seeking engaging, standards-aligned experiences that help students (and teachers) thrive when the path forward isn’t obvious.
